Christmas Day

As usual, we had a few visitors in our bed rooom bright and early in the morning.  They were ever so excited because they knew what waited for them in the living room under the tree.  Actually, they were quite surprised to find a few gifts under the tree in their room.  They were excited and wanted to open them immediately, so they did.

Next, they moved onto the living room for some more presents.  "Santa" had blocked the hallway with some streamers, so they had to break through them to get to the presents.  First, they had to check out a note from Santa thanking the boys for the cookies they made for him.  Needless to say, they were so excited to see their presents; however, they were distracted by their stockings and wanted to open those first.  Maureen convinced them to open up their big presents first and then move on.  The theme this year was Crayola, Planes, the Octonauts, and Jake & the Neverland Pirates!  Thankfully, there wasn't a visit from the Krampus aka the Grumpus (as the boys call him).

Decorating the Tree (I Would Have Called It Tree Trimming, But I Already Used The Title)*

They had been clammoring to decorate the tree since we picked it up this morning, so they were ever so excited to finally get around to it.  Actually, they were excited to see the lights on the tree.  They wanted to help put the lights on the tree, but Maureen needed to do that by herself.

Once the lights were strung, it was time to start placing the ornaments.  John decided that he was going to build a train track around the tree.  As I type this, he is still doing it.  He's asking to build the tracks into the tree, but Maureen telling him that it is too heavy.  Young Nicholas Edward has been the stalwart helper for his mother.

Not surprisingly, the boys are doing their activities in the underwear.  They have some thing against wearing pants once they get home.  Anywho, Maureen said, "Let's make sure they are wearing pants next year."  They're still placing different ornaments on the tree and asking about presents.  It's going to be 10-more days of that.  God help us!

*Yes, we did have to put the star on twice.  They each wanted to put it at the top of the tree.

Nativity Fun

When I was younger, I liked to play with my parents' Italian Nativity set.  Needless to say, there were many chips and broken figures in said set.  I even placed my Yoda action figure in the bed of hay with Jesus every Christmas.  As you can see, the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.  As you can see, Nicholas even sings a song about little baby Jesus.   It then segues into a talk about going to Mass on Christmas Day.  I like John's comment at the end regarding Nicholas' behavior at church.

Trimming the Tree

We headed to Home Depot this morning to pick up a Christmas tree.  John was a bit upset because he wanted to go to the OSH on La Brea, but it is still under construction.  He was crying and saying that he was ready to cancel Christmas because OSH wasn't open yet.  When Maureen turned onto Santa Monica Blvd., he changed his tune because he thought we were going home.

As we get to the tree area, there were only a couple of Home Depot associates attending to it.  Thankfully, a nice young man came over and picked out a great tree.  At first, John didn't want the tree because he said it was too small.  It was still banded together.  Once our helper opened it up, he was quite happy with the size.  We were in and out in about 20-minutes.  That's the quickest time we've ever spent buying a tree.

So, we get home and place the tree in the base and Maureen starts trimming some of the lower branches to clear the base.  Guess who grabbed their own scissors and started trimming and pruning a few branches.  Yes, the boys were quite helpful at that.

One More Birthday Post

Goldie, Our Latest Family Member

Somehow, Nicholas got it into his head that we were going to buy him a Betta fish for his birthday that was orange and that he was going to name Goldie after the goldfish on Peppa Pig.  Sure enough, we gave in and picked up a fish for him.  He was so excited to see that they had an orange fish that's like John's blue fish, Blue.  We even had to pick up some orange rocks for Goldie's new bowl.

Both boys saw all sorts of pets that they want.  Maureen was squirming when John asked for a pet rat like his old class pet, Jewel.  Nicholas passed on my faux offer to get a turtle because he's happy having one in his classroom.

Bowling in Koreatown

As one of Nicholas' birthday treats, we said that we'd do anything he wanted to do.  John had all sorts of ideas about what he wanted to do, especially ice skating.  We had to break it to him that it was Nicholas' choice.  Nicholas chose miniature golf.  Sadly, we had to tell him that it was raining and that it wouldn't be too much fun to golf in the rain.  I was running out of suggestions when Maureen mentioned bowling.  Immediately, he said, "Yes, I want to go bowling."  Both have been dying to go bowling since Mother's Day when we stopped in to the Mission Bowling Alley to check it out.

Grammy even joined us for some bowling in Koreatown.  She said that she hadn't been bowling since high school which was many moons ago.  The boys enjoyed themselves quite a bit.  John and Nicholas didn't use any help at first and rolled the balls very, very, very slowly down the lanes.  The attendant was kind enough to bring us some ramps to help with it.  They really liked that as well because they got to push it down a hill.  They also loved the ball return machine and called it the bowling ball train.  Honestly, they could have watched that and been as happy as could be.  In any event, we found out that they both liked bowling and it was relatively inexpensive.

John was pushing to go to Old MacDonalds for lunch, but we thought better of that.  Grammy treated us all to Woodranch at the Farmer's Market.  As usual, Nicholas ate his bacon and french fries, but he did get a very special treat from our server.  She brought out an ice cream sundae with a candle.  He liked that quite a bit.

Friday Night at the Grove

Maureen was not able to secure tickets to Supper with Santa at the Ebell Theater, so she decided to take the boys to The Grove for dinner and a little snow fun.  The boys have been dying to see the snow at The Grove since last month and now they were going to get their chance.  As if that weren't enough, some of their school friends were going to join them for fun.

So, they headed over to the Farmer's Market for some dinner and running around the stools.  That helps to tire them out.  After dinner, the trolley was letting people off, so they jumped on board.  This was a dream come true for these two because they were out at night, they had dinner away from home, and they got to ride the trolley.  To top it all off, they got to see the really cool "snow" at The Grove.

Sadly, I was unable to attend because I had to work, but they had tons of fun and fell asleep as soon as they got home.  I'd say that was a success.

It's My Birthday, My Bu-Bu-Bu-Birthday

Nicholas woke up this morning at 6:45 and came into our room and said, "I'm four years old today!"  We had to remind him to keep his voice down because not everyone in the building needs to hear his proclaimations.  So, we stalled for a bit before we headed out to the living room to open up his presents.  He was quite excited to see his Dusty Scooter that we gave him.  He was very thankful for the Dusty books that John "gave" to him.  As you can see, there is s theme to the gifts.   He got a little upset and was quite rude to some family members who gave him a Batman toy.  Maureen was mortified.

Additionally, he gets to have anything he wants for breakfast.  Guess what he chose?  He chose ice cream with chocolate sauce.  We've asked him what he wants to do today.  He said miniature golf, but we told him it might rain.  John was pushing for ice skating, but we had to remind him that it was Nicholas' choice today.  Maureen tossed out bowling and Nicholas thought that might be fun.  He asked if people do that outside and we told him yes, but that only old men who wear white bowl outside.  We told him it's called lawn bowling or bocce ball.

Class Pet

Last year, Maureen brought Nicholas' class pet, Pepe the Guinea Pig, home for a weekend.  This year, his class pet is Rambo the Turtle.  This is video from his first visit to our place.  The boys were so excited to take care of Rambo.  They were so excited that John cracked Rambo's aquarium with his noggin.

As I type this, he is making his second visit to our place.  Let's hope they do not break it again.  They are creating fun zones with their building blocks for Rambo to go through.

Thanksgiving at the Gaunt Residence

Yesterday, we headed out to Calabasas for Thanksgiving dinner at the Gaunt Residence.  As always, the house was full of love and joy.  It was also full of small children running around and causing havoc as they entertained themselves.  John and Nicholas were happy to see their good buddies, but they were even more excited to roll around on the floor and wrestle with them.

The boys all plotted against the one lone girl, Adriana.  They had plans to do karate chops and to throw rocks at her to prevent her from joining them in the creek.  Thankfully, they didn't do that because that would not have been a good.

As the night went on and dessert time was upon us, the boys picked up their cupcakes.  Actually, they wanted their cupcakes before dinner, but we were able to convince them to eat their meals.  John wanted to go eat the cupcakes outside so we did.  He kept on insisting that he heard wolves in the hills and was scared until Jesse told him that there are no wolves in California.  That saved the day.  The rest of the boys went inside, but John and I were still talking and enjoying the fresh air.  It wasn't horribly cold, but it was rather nippy.

Sadly, we had to head home and John asked Aunt Patty when we could come back.  She said, "Anytime."  I warned her that he'd probably want to come back today and she said that we were always welcome.  The boys were so worn out from the fun that they just crashed in the back seat of the car.  We considered going to Target to see how things were, but we thought better of it.  We even had a plan of how we could lay them out in a cart and let them sleep.  That last part is a joke.  We would never have done that.

Soup Day at Plymouth School

Wednesday was Soup Day at Plymouth School.  The kids each bring a vegetable to be added to a communal soup.  As if that weren't enough participation, the kids get to chop up the vegetables.  Maureen asked if I would help chop in the Big House aka John's class while she helped out in Fran's class.  Now, my mother made me a nervous wreck when it comes to knives and small children and I mentioned this to Maureen.  She allayed my fears by saying they would be cutting with plastic knives, so I was ok with my assignment.

John helped for about five minutes and then took off because he was "too tired".  It's more like he wanted to go play with his friends.  It's the classic free rider strategy in game theory.  You let others do the work and reap the rewards.  It's quite ingenious on his and his other friends's parts.  Still, there were a few little folks who did chop up for quite a good amount of time.  John's friends Valentina and Caroline helped chop with their parents.

Exactly what Nicholas did, I cannot say.  I will say that he decided to bring an orange bell pepper and chop it up because it was orange.  He also brought the requested carrots, but he was adamant about bringing a bell pepper.  His teacher Fran was kind enough to allow him to do his thing.  Like Pharoh, he's quite obstinate when he wants to be.

Fun in the Valley

Saturday Night, we headed to Pump It Up in Van Nuys to celebrate Ana's birthday.  The boys had been excited all day and John was very concerned that we get there on time.  He kept on asking us what the quickest route to Van Nuys was.  As usual, he was a little shy when he got there, but he warmed up.  Nicholas, on the other hand, was ready to go from the moment they let us into the bouncing rooms.  He was running around fearlessly with all the other big kids.  As the party progressed, they took us into the glow in the dark room and the boys were in heaven.

They could have stayed there all night, but we had to head home it was after 8 PM and we know they don't do well if they don't get enough sleep.  As a treat, I decided to drive by the Van Nuys Airport to see if any planes were landing.  Sadly, they weren't, but we did have an exciting time as we drove through a DUI checkpoint in front of the Budweiser brewery on Roscoe.  John and Nicholas both waved and said hi to the officer as he talked to me and wished us a good night.

Last Sunday, we headed into the Valley for haircuts at The Yellow Balloon.  It had been a while since we'd paid a visit to Vic.  John always asks to be first because he thinks that he'll have more playing time if he does that.  Now that I think of it, that's pretty much true since it usually takes a little longer to cut Nicholas' bowl cut just right.  Anywho, Nicholas discovered the joy of pinball as we enjoyed the Star Wars pinball game.  John was just happy to have his water and pop corn.

When we were finished, I decided to surprise them and take them to Castle Golf for a round of miniature golf.  John had been asking us to go to miniature golf the night before (he wanted to go there after Ana's party), so I figured it would be fun to see if they liked it.  I warned them that it would take a while.  Playing 18 holes with 2 small children is not an easy task.  They both took to it quite well.  After our game, we had to have lunch at the snack bar.  Let me tell you that the food at the snack bar is not as good as I remember it.  It's probably the same, but I thought it was better.

We even headed over to Mami and Papi's to show off their new hair cuts.  They wanted to go swimming in the inflatable pool, but we dashed their hopes when we told them it was too cold.  Shame on us for ruining their fun.

Halloween

Woody and Dusty aka John and Nicholas had an exciting Halloween.  They went trick or treating three times.  The first was at Mami and Papi's house, where John did not want to wear his costume, but Nicholas did.  The second was at Grammy's house where they both wore their costumes.  The third and final stop was their friends' house for a Halloween party and trick or treating.  Apparently, we went to the place to be on Halloween.  The streets were packed and LAPD were even giving out really good candy from their mobil command center.  It was such an exciting night that they didn't get to bed until about 8 PM, well past their bed time.

The Day That Wouldn't End

I've always sworn that we wouldn't try to schedule too many activities in any given day for the boys.  I like have one or two tops because I like to have some flexibility in the schedule.  Today, we deviated from that just a little bit.  We had three events to attend and it's been a really, really long day.

First, we headed over to LAFD Station 61 for a pancake breakfast.  It was rather foggy and misty as we walked along the street to the fire station.  This really excited John quite a bit.  We got to the station at about 8:15 and they were still cooking the first batch of pancakes.  We headed over to the fire trucks to see how many cool things we could see.  The boys really loved the old fashioned fire truck with the hand cranked siren.  They were also excited to sit in the modern fire truck.  Their friend set the siren off as someone was making a speech.  The firemen were kind enough to say it was ok and didn't make the kids exit the truck.  As we were leaving, several of the firemen thanked us for visiting and invited us for visits at any time.  They said that we were always welcome to visit and tour the facility.

So, that really started the morning with a bang, but that was followed by a Halloween party at a friend's house.  They both wore their costumes for a short time; however, they both eventually took the costumes off because it was much easier to jump around in the bounce house in their regular clothes.  There were all sorts of fun activities, but all they wanted to do was jump around.  A bounce house is all you need for a children's party.  Aside from that, they were able to enjoy all sorts of candies.  AND, John disovered that he liked bagels with cream cheese.

We headed home to get changed and have a little lunch before we headed down to the Larchmont Family Fair on their favorite boulevard, Larchmont.  As we walked past the booths, Maureen kept on running into all sorts of friends and stopped to talk to them.  John was very frustrated because he wanted to see his friends and go on the slide.  Well, we eventually made it to the slide, but not before we picked up sno-cones.  After some fun slide and bounce house time, we headed over to get some food.  John asked for a bagel and cream cheese.  Nicholas asked for cotton candy.  Maureen and I had tacos at Pinches Tacos .  I must declare those tacos to be the best I have EVER had.  As we waited for the tacos, the boys were trying to sing along to the music playing in the background.  They tried to sing Cielito Lindo even though it wasn't playing.

Finally, we headed home and we are headed for an early bedtime.  I'd go on, but it has just been too darned long.

Dinner with Grammy

Saturday, October 26th, would have been Grammy and Grandpa Dick's 50th Wedding Anniversary, so we decided to take Grammy out to dinner.  At first, we were headed to Fiddler's Bistro or Lulu's because we know the boys like either.  We decided that we needed to make it a special dinner, so we decided to surprise Grammy by taking her to Tony P's in Marina Del Rey.  Grandpa Dick was quite the sailor, so we thought it would be nice to have dinner by the water.  John wanted to keep it a secret until we got to our destination.  Nicholas kept trying to blurt it out, but John would stop him in time.  As always, it was a lovely dinner and we even got to take a walk along the boats.  I'd say everyone had a great time.

On a side note, the wait staff at Tony P's is the best ever.  They always cater to our every whim and need.  And, believe me when I say the boys require tons of extra special attention!

Halloween Prep Work

As Halloween approaches, the boys get ever so excited about decorating the apartment.  They just love creating art at school and putting it up on the walls/windows.  They are especially excited when they get to carve a pumpkin.  Earlier this week, Maureen and the boys took our pumpking and created a jack-o-lantern through their creative natures.

As if decorating and carving a jack-o-lantern weren't enough excitement, the boys were invited to a Halloween party this morning at their friend's house.  Costumes were optional, so the boys decided to wear their costumes; however, they eventually took them off.  They decided that it was best to jump around in the bounce house in their regular clothes.

By the way, Nicholas' costume was the hit of the party.  Many of his friends were so impressed and wanted to know where to get it.

Happy Birthday Mama

Today was Maureen's birthday, so it was a day where we had to do everything and anything that she wanted to do.  She had three wishes:  1.  Go to Sunday Mass; 2.  Go to the Fall Festival at the Farmer's Market; and 3.  Have dinner with Grammy.  Since those three wishes were pretty easy.  We accomplished them all.

Sunday Mass at St. Brendan's was quite an adventure.  First, we got a late start, so there was no room in the parking lot by the time we arrive.  We had to park two blocks away and Nicholas complained the entire time.  Then, he got really bored in Mass and spent a good 20 minutes lying on the floor beneath the pew during Mass.  He did shape up enough to get a donut after Mass, but just barely.

After that, we headed over to the Farmer's Market to see the Fall Festival.  We were hoping for something that would top last year's "The World's Biggest Potato", but we were disappointed.  There really wasn't much to do aside from the petting zoo and the pony rides.  We headed over to Dylan's Candy Bar to pick up some lollipops and ran into one of John's old teachers.  John was quite surprised!

Finally, we had a lovely pizza dinner at home with Grammy.  We had origianlly planned on heading to Village Pizzeria for an early dinner, but later, we decided to stay home and order in.  Rocco's has great specials after 4 PM every day.  That's our standby if we're too tired after the long day at work.  The cake was surprisingly good.  I picked it up today at Ralph's and was quite pleased with the taste and quality.

Good Luck Next Year

John is kind of sad that the Dodgers lost last night, but he's happy that Uncle Rick Upshaw and Johnny the Mailman are happy (they are Cardinals fans).    Every so often, he asks if we can go play baseball in the courtyard or in the larger park across the street.

We headed out two weeks ago to practice our hitting. There are times we hit off the batting tee and there are other times I just pitch it to him.  He's pretty good at connecting about 50% of the time when I pitch it.  Nicholas is still learning to connect, but he gets about 30% of the pitches.  When they connect, they both yell "HOME RUN" and start running around the "bases".

They both love playing a game that involves throwing the ball past me so that I'll have to chase after it.  That is ever so fun.

Lunch at the Kmart Little Caesar's

While they were at Kmart, John asked if they could have lunch at the Kmart cafeteria.  It was too early, so they stuck around and looked at the toys.  Maureen took many pictures for Santa to reference at a later date.  Around 11:30, they headed to the lunch area for their fantastic meal of Little Caesar's slices and Icees.  Now, they've had good pizza, so they know the difference between good and bad.  They still love Little Caesar's.  I cannot explain it  The quality is rather poor, but they don't seem to mind.  Then again, they love Domino's and Papa John's.  The one pizza they don't like is Pizza Hut.

But, I digress.  I'm told that they were quite good during lunch and John even started singing "Halloween Spooks" for the rest of the patrons.  They even posed with a really big standee of the Icee Bear.  Who knew there were so many fun things to do at Kmart.

Halloween Spooks at Kmart

As Halloween approaches, we are always concerned with the following question, what will the boys wear?  Last year, we had two fifths of The Village People.  This year, we have a bit of a Disney theme.

On Sunday, we headed to Target to pick up a few things.  Of course, we had to head over to the Halloween section to see all the fun things.  Nicholas zeroed in on a Dusty from the Planes movie costume that was exclusive to Target.  We did wind up buying it because he really wanted in and it was all he was talking about since he first saw the costume earlier in the week.   We asked John if he saw anything he like and he was just very wishy washy and said he didn't want to be anything.

Yesterday, Maureen took the boys to Kmart to see if there were any good costumes for John to look at.  They played with really cool pirate swords that made sounds (we'll go back the day after Halloween and pick them up for 90% off)  They must have spent quite a bit of time reviewing the costumes until John decided that he wanted to be Woody from Toy Story.  BTW, it's the same costume that his cousin Marielena had when she was younger.  I think the cowboy hat is still floating around Mami and Papi's house.

Breakfast This Morning

Nicholas woke up this morning and came into our bedroom at the ungodly hour of 5:15 after rolling around in our bed for about 10-minutes, he headed back to his bed for a little more rest.  John popped in around 6:15, but then headed out to the living room.  I went out there to ask him if he wanted anything special for breakfast.  He said, "I know.  It's a lovely day to take a walk and have breakfast outside.  Let's go to the coffee cart."

So, we decided it was a good day to head out.  When we stepped out of the building, John said, "Oh, it's so nice to get some fresh air, isn't it?"  What 5-year old says things like that?  Anywho, we walked until we reached the coffee cart and made our orders.  The boys each got a muffin and shared a milk.  Maureen and I had croissants and coffee/hot chocolate.  I must say I was impressed with the fancy hot chocolate.  I'm used to Swiss Miss or Carnation instant.  This was freshly brewed by the coffee cart guy.  He was a little nervous.  It was his first day.  He did a great job and even gave the boys a little whipped cream and with chocolate sauce in tiny cups.

What a great way to start the day!!

The King of the Pumpkins

Nicholas decided that he was the King of the Pumpkins and created a song to celebrate his ascension to the throne.  All Hail Nicholas I, King of the Pumpkins.

We Love BHPD & LAPD

A couple of weeks ago, the Beverly Hills Police Department had its annual pancake breakfast and open house.  The boys were so excited because they love pancakes and Beverly Hills, not necessarily in that order.  Anywho, we were quite excited to pull up and see all the vehicles from the standard police cruiser to the SWAT vehicle (we event went inside of that one).  The boys were happy to wait in line for their pancakes that were catered by the Beverly Hilton.  Let me tell you, free pancakes, any free pancakes, are great, but these were restaurant quality pancakes.  Nicholas even got to try their chocolate chip pancakes.

After breakfast, we headed off to see the exhibits.  John was quite intrigued by the police dog.  It was some sort of Belgian breed, but his partner spoke to him in German.  I always tell Maureen that you can speak to any dog in German and it'll understand.  Since a tour of the police station was on the menu, we headed up to take it.  This was a great tour because it took us all over the place from the shooting range to the actual jail.  John is fascinated by jails, so he was particularly excited to visit.  We got to see the drunk tank, a real jail cell, and the padded cell where they put the violent criminals.  We also saw that there was only a drain where they can go to the bathroom if they need it.  The boys didn't quite understand, so we didn't push it.  All in all, it was quite a nice visit and we warned the boys that this is the only time they should ever be in a jail.

Today, we headed over to LAPD's Wilshire Division for their open house.  We went there last year, so we thought it would be fun to go again.  This year, the boys participated a bit more than last year.  They particularly liked the trailer that simulated a 3.5 magnitude earthquake.  They liked watching the stuffed animals fall down.  They also liked the special Mexican popsicles this year.  Last year, they both said, "Ewwww, those aren't popsicles."  This year, Nicholas probably got his first serving of fruit in a long time
when he ate the strawberry paleta.

Another benefit of going to this open house is the free Pink's hot dogs.  Thanks to the Pink Family for donating their wonderful product to such a great experience.  It's always good to have a Pink dog, but it's even better to have a free Pink dog.  We skipped the tour this time since we took it last year and the boys didn't want to wait for it, but we did check out Reed & Malloy's crusier from Adam-12.  That's always a hit with the boys and me.

As we were leaving, John affirmed his desire to be a police officer.  Nicholas chimed in that he wanted to be one as well.  John pointed out that Nicholas wanted to be a daddy artist, but we told him that he could be a daddy artist police officer.  It's good to have dreams.

Papi's Boys

As everyone knows, Papi loves his bread.  He really, really loves french bread in particular.  The boys seem to take after their grandfather in this respect.  They both insist on picking up at least one loaf of french bread at the market.  A couple of weeks ago, Maureen went to the Miracle Mile Farmer's Market and picked up two fresh loaves of bread.  She was so excited to bring them home and was going to freeze one after getting instructions on how to do it from the baker.

Well, she went to pick up the boys at school shortly after her trip to the farmer's market and still had her produce and bread.  While John was showing his friend his new booster seat, Nicholas climbed to the front of the car and proceeded to start eating the bread.  When John became aware of this, he also asked for a loaf.  Needless to say, Maureen didn't get a chance to preserve her bread in the freezer.  Oh well, the boys enjoyed a fine snack on their drive home.

Guess Who's Back In School

The boys started school on Monday.  Both will be going 3-days per week.  They'll get a nice 4-day weekend from Thursday to Sunday.  I wish I could pull that off.

Anyway, John went into his final year of preschool and Nicholas went into his second year.  John was ok with everything and ready to go.  Nicholas was a bit apprehensive about going into a new class.  He said that he was going to show his new orange Dusty shoes to his new teacher, but then, he was going to go back to his old classroom.  When he got to his new classroom, there was an orange balloon with his name on it.  As soon as he saw that, his plan was gone.  He was ready to stay in the right room.
This afternoon, John asked me to move the clock in their room over to his side.  He wants the alarm over there because he knows he'll be going to Kindergarten next year.  He said, "I need to wake up early next year becaue I can't be late to Kindergarten.  They don't like it when you are late to school."  It's good that he has that great attitude about being on time at such an early age.  When I went to school, you'd get detention if you were late to school.
